Mazda 2 AP4
Number Plates:
HTQ248 > KUF467
Driver/Ownership:
2017 - 2021: Jack Hawkeswood
Destroyed Rally Whangarei 2021
History:
The car was built by the team at Force Motorsport for the 2017 season for Jack Hawkeswood to use in the New Zealand Rally Championship. The car started its life effectively AP2 spec, with the car featuring a naturally aspirated 2L engine and front wheel drive drivetrain. It also features a sequential gearbox. The body shell has been fabricated to allow for the conversion to AP4 spec.
Unfortunately, in the first round of the season at Rally Otago, Hawkeswood rolled his car heavily in a high speed crash on the Kuri Bush stage. The duration of 2017 would see the car rebuilt, with Hawkeswood's next championship outing coming at the 2018 Rally of South Canterbury.
The car would be converted to AP4 spec and Hawkeswood would show huge improvement over the following NZRC seasons to be regularly matching the pace of the front runners. Unfortunately, the car suffered a massive accident at Rally Whangarei 2021 which would see a new car built for Jack Hawkeswood.
