History:
This 1998 Evo 5 RS began its rally journey in its iconic yellow paint scheme as the first ATOM1 Evo owned by Sean Gray from 1999. It would be campaigned in events throughout New Zealand and in 2000 it was leased to Japanese driver Fumiaki Takahashi for the international Rally New Zealand, finishing 45th overall.
Gray had stepped up into his later generation Evo 6 and the Evo 5 ended up in the hands of Dylan Turner in the early stages of his illustrious rallying career. Turner was stepping up from his Legacy RS currently owned by Simon Bell and displayed in the nostalgic Camel livery. Interestingly, Gray’s second ATOM Evo would also end up in the hands of Dylan Turner. There remains infamous footage of Turner spinning the Evo 5 on a narrow bridge, commencing an Austin Powers style 9-point turn.
The car would be campaigned next by Jeremy Cassells running it at Rally NZ in 2005, stepping away from the iconic yellow. Unfortunately, Cassels would retire from the event due to a mechanical failure and it was then sold to Andrew Spier based in the lower North Island. Spier had stepped up from his earlier generation Evo 3 and ran the Evo 5 for a season before his acquisition of the Ex-Modem Evo originally campaigned by Chris West as part of the Modem team with Bruce Herbert in the early 2000s. Also based in the lower North Island, Gavin Pollard would use it in events in 2008 and 2009.
2011 and the car would be next campaigned by the current owner, Taumaranui based Quentin Palmer. He has used the car predominately across the North Island in many events. The highlight would likely have to be the third placed finish at Rally Waitomo in 2019, an amazing performance in the older generation car.
