Hyundai i20 AP4
Number Plates:
JSL191
Driver/Ownership:
2016 - Current: Hayden Paddon
2017: David Holder
2017: Job Quantock
History:
In 2015 Hyundai NZ alongside Hayden Paddon Rallysport commissioned the car to be built by Andrew Hawkeswood's Force Motorsport for Hayden Paddon to use in the 2016 NZRC in between his WRC commitments. The car was built along side three other cars under AP4+ rules, including Hawkeswood's Mazda, and Inkster's Skoda. The i20 is fitted with a 1.8 litre Hyundai engine and features a Sadev gearbox and custom suspension.
Paddon debuted the car at the season opening Rally Otago in spectacular form entertaining the the crowd with his sensational speed and dominating the rally winning by an NZRC record of 9 min 22 sec. Along the way he won 16 out the 17 stages only missing out on the the tarmac super special and recording a record time on all his winning stages. He would also go on to use the car at Rally Whangarei but teething issues for the car meant it could not repeat the rally winning success of it's debut. However when the car was running Paddon continued to show his class dominating the time sheets.
The end of the 2016 season would see Hyundai NZ set up the inaugural Hyundai NZ Young Driver Shootout, with a chance for many of New Zealand's young up and coming drivers to show their stuff behind the wheel. 5 contestants got an opportunity to drive the car, including Matt Summerfield, Max Bailey, Sloan Cox, Job Quantock and Dylan Thomson. Eventually Quantock would come out tops in the shootout, winning the opportunity to drive for Hyundai NZ and Paddon Rallysport on two rounds of the 2017 NZRC, the Canterbury Rally and the Rally of Waitomo. The 2017 calendar would initially see 2016 NZRC champ David Holder secure the the two opening rounds of the NZRC in the car.
Dave Holder got off to the perfect start in 2017, winning the opening round of the NZRC at Rally Otago. Success alluded the Hyundai drivers for the rest of the season with Holder having and engine drama in Whangarei.
2018 would see an extended program for Hayden Paddon, competing in the majority of the NZRC events in between his WRC commitments. Paddon started his 2018 season off, with a clean sweep of all stages at the season opening Rally Otago going one better than his 2016 effort. He continued this form taking a dominate victory in Whangarei against the few APRC car entered, before skipping Canterbury for WRC commitments. He and the car returned to the NZRC for his home rally, South Canterbury which was making its return after a 34 year hiatus, Paddon was again dominate but his stage winning streak was broken on stage 3 by Subaru driver Ben Hunt.
With the car being rebuilt following Hayden's crash at Jacks Ridge at the back end of 2020, the car would feature a face lift for the 2021 season.
